What people say about Andrew

I worked with Andrew in preparation for the Squamish 50k race from December 2023 to race day in August, 2024.

Having never done any racing before and only run a maximum of about 20km for fun before that, a tight/convoluted work schedule (2 weeks on, 2 weeks off, with a period of 7weeks in a row of work), Andrew had quite a challenge ahead of him. Though he did reassure me this was within my grasp.

With a structured running program that took into account the hectic work schedule and sometimes limited energy, Andrew was able to re-assure and adapt the program readily and easily to stay on target.

In addition, my wife was training for her comeback ultra on her own self-guided program and Andrew continued to be available to adjust my program so that we could enjoy some great memories training together.

My goal was to complete the race without injury and within the 11h30min cutoff. No goal to actually enjoy the race.
I achieved a 9hr13min time and actually enjoyed the whole race.

To sum it up, Andrew started with a pretty busy/sometimes completely erratic schedule guy, decently fit, but by-no-means a runner. Then with patience, relative ease and flexibility and a surprising amount of enjoyment, coached me into doing a race comfortably that given the distance and elevation profile, thought would knock me flat.

Big thumbs up for working with Andrew. His knowledge and passion for what he does, combined with his patience, compassion and understanding means that he’s the perfect partner for getting you to your running goals.

I don’t think there are many who can say that they ran their fastest marathon at age 49, on their 22nd attempt at the distance over 15 years, but that’s what happened when I hired Andrew as my coach for the California International Marathon in 2024.

I had known him for years as an accomplished runner in the Bow Valley – on both road and trails – and I respected his approach to his own training, so when I learned that he had obtained his coaching certification, I asked if he would put a plan together for me. It would be my fifth time running CIM. We began with a pre-training block, which included strength work and one weekly quality run, so when marathon training time approached, I was healthy and ready to run. The months that followed were the first in many years of road racing that I truly enjoyed the training – Andrew worked with me to find the right balance of effort, rest, and nutrition, with a build-up and periodic time trials that meant I was seeing improvement over the weeks, hitting consistent paces as I got stronger.

Andrew has an easygoing nature, providing just the right level of feedback; he is well researched and technical, but also has the personal experience to support his programs and methods. While he was coaching me for my road marathon, his other clients varied from those training for a 50k trail race to the Grand Canyon rim-to-rim-to-rim.

After years of self-guided training, working with Andrew reminded me of the benefits of having a coach, and I have no doubt that it’s what enabled me to shave almost five minutes off my previous best marathon time one month before my 50th Birthday. I stood at the CIM start line healthy, confident, and ready to race. Andrew is organized but flexible, competitive but affable, disciplined but kind. I found his coaching to be high quality and great value.
